Creative Writing

the art of making things up as we go along

What does it mean to write?

Traditionally referred to as literature, creative writing is somewhat of an art – the art of making things up as we go along (in a way that seems thought out and systematic), whether it is;

  • Poetry
  • Plays
  • Movie and television scripts
  • Fiction (novels, novellas, and short stories)
  • Songs
  • Speeches
  • Memoirs
  • Personal essays

We will use a variety of exercises throughout the course which we will then reflect on how our writing process was and why it was like so. We will explore the techniques we used in our writing: How did we prepare to write our poem? How did we create the setting? How did we establish this point-of-view? How did we appeal to our audience’s emotions?

We will study various different books, reading through them together chapter by chapter; through this we will dissect the methods used as well as try to understand how we relate, in turn this should lead us on to what our unique style is.

Though the definition is rather loose, creative writing can be considered as any form of writing that is original and self-expressive. It is not always fiction (Speeches, Memoirs, Personal essays), we can write factual pieces in such a way that creativity is what makes them interesting to write and therefore to read.

Through this method of learning, we will begin to think, understand and express in our new Language which will, in turn, help our minds develop, as well as, perhaps alter the way we view and perceive the world around us.
