Debating, Public speaking and Spoken word.
During our time together, we will practice how to formulate what it is we are thinking and trying to express. We will use a variety of different styles and techniques until we find the one that fits who we are and what we want to say. This will be done through; debate, spoken word and public speaking.

Debate is a valuable activity for students of all skill levels. It teaches us useful skills for other academic pursuits and life in a variety of ways. Most obviously, Your debaters will build confidence speaking in public and expressing their ideas eloquently. 

 

What is Public Speaking?

Whether we’re talking in a team meeting or presenting in front of an audience, we all have to speak in public from time to time. We can do this well or we can do this badly, and the outcome strongly affects the way we feel within ourselves and how we perceive our future achievements and goals. This is why public speaking causes so much anxiety and concern for people of all ages. 

The good news is that, with thorough preparation and practice, we can overcome our nervousness and perform beyond our beliefs.

What is Spoken word?

Definition of The Spoken Word (noun): things that people say, rather than write.

Spoken word is usually written on a page and then performed for an audience. 

It relies on heavy use of rhythm, improvisation, rhymes, wordplay, and slang. … Some examples of spoken word you might be familiar with are stories, poems, monologues, slam poetry, rap and even stand-up comedy. 

 

During our classes, we will practice how to formulate what it is we are thinking and trying to express. We will use a variety of different styles and techniques until we find the one that fits who we are and what we want to say. 

While studying and writing any form of poetry helps students develop literacy skills, Spoken Word is different in that it also helps students build social and emotional skill sets including self-awareness, communication and confidence.
